Muse inadvertently cause offense with Panic Station video that features Rising Sun Flag

Muse’s new music video for Panic Station proved controversial on YouTube for featuring the Rising Sun Flag, which is sometimes associated with Japanese imperialism.

The music video was apparently intended to be light-hearted in tone, with band members Matt Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard roaming around Tokyo dressed as ‘cowboy ravers’ and other fancy dress creations’.

But there was anger on YouTube, with the always prickly comments section exploding over the video’s inclusion of the Rising Sun Flag.

Originally used as the war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army until the end of World War II, the symbol is still employed by the Japan Self-Defense Forces and appears in many advertisements, but is considered offensive by some who associate it with Japanese militarism.

‘Wtf rising sun flag!!! Psy must use nazi flag in next MV’ wrote one user, while others called for calm.

The three-piece have since apologised and promised to alter the video, writing on Twitter: ‘Sorry for the mistake re the intro graphics for the Panic Station video. We are fixing it now. We will upload a new version very soon.’
